You know the world known saying, “A smile can say a thousand words?” Well, it can also travel a thousand places, too.
Like every other American teenager, I too, have a Netflix obsession. My boyfriend and I are continuously finding shows that we love and binge watching them like it is nobody’s business. Recently, we became obsessed with watching the 10th season of “Next Food Network Star” (where a group of individuals get together to compete to be crowned the “Next Food Network Star”…duhhhh), and since the beginning, I had an absolute favorite contender.
Among the plethora of fake-y smiley faces and semi-good looking men, there was one contender that struck me as alluring just because of how REAL he was. You could tell his smiles were nowhere near forced, and that he was not planning on winning over any cookin’ lovin’ ladies because of his looks. From the start of the competition, not only did his originality and passion drown me in goosebumps, but his genuineness overwhelmed me in utter happiness. I rooted for him like no other.
As the competition proceeded, and each week the contestants fought for the winning title, my man continued to impress the judges and WOW any audiences he came in contact with. He didn’t WOW them with seriousness or looks; he WOW-ed them because he was completely comfortable with being himself. From goofy to outlandish to childish, he also kept close his humbleness, sincerity and respectfulness. Not only did he manage to carry all those enticing characteristics and more throughout the competition, but he was also extremely, extremely talented. Man, could he REALLY cook!
Getting closer to my point, (SPOILER ALERT, I REPEAT…SPOILER ALERT) my man won. He won the title of “The Next Food Network Star”. America fell in love with him, as did I, and he won. Not to mention, the final two being him and the notoriously attractive young Italian guy. He…won.
My point being, his confidence was contagious. Every time he walked out on stage sporting his full cowboy attire and crackin’ jokes left and right, you could almost feel his confidence streaming right through the television screen. His smile was real…it was infectious and sincere and genuine. His boldness, as well as his passion, was overwhelmingly enjoyable. Towards the end of the season, I looked to my boyfriend and said, “He is the definition of No Dress Code.” No, no, no…not because his style was “on fleek”…but because he as completely and utterly content with being himself. He shared his confidence, his smile, and his passion with the nation- not second guessing one move he made because it was genuinely him. In one of the episodes, he promised the crowd of Pool Partier teenagers he would do a belly flop if he won the best burger in the competition. Not only did he end up winning the best burger, he also won over the audience. Without second thought, he belly flopped. Throughout the season, one thing I will never forget is that he showed his respectfulness towards any authority that appeared on the show. He was consistently polite and would always take off his cowboy hat when meeting an authority or when given advice, criticism, or compliments. That legitimately warmed my heart every…dang…time.
What I am saying is, every person has this uniqueness inside of them. Yes, even YOU! There are over 7 billion people in this world, and not one of us is the exact same. YOU have certain little quirks and qualities that you should take advantage of and share with people you come in contact with every day. Don’t hold back on being who you are because you are afraid of the looks, stares, and criticism you may get. For every person who criticizes who you are, there are a hundred people who you just influenced. A smile is worth a thousand words, yes. But a smile, confidence, and passion can travel a thousand places, too.
