It is not about money at all in the beginning... becausethere is no money ." If I had a penny for every person that talks to me about modeling and asks, “Do you get paid?!” I’d be filthy, filthy rich. Starting out with freelance modeling, I quickly realized that pay days were nonexistent and were going to be for a long while. I had to ask myself a couple of times, “Then is it even worth it?” Obviously now, you can see that I answered yes, and decided to keep pursuing this goal even though I knew I would not be receiving any compensation for what I was doing. I also quickly realized that starting out, it really is ALL ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE! In my opinion, it should always be about the experience, but when you start getting paid a good chunk of money for doing something you love, it is hard to decide whether or not you are still truly doing it for the experience. I’ve been modeling for almost a year now, and although many may gasp and think that sounds like a long time, it really isn’t long at all. In my eyes, I still am sort of a newbie. I’ve done a countless number of photo shoots, walked in a handful of runway shows, and networked with over hundreds of people, and maybe have gotten paid what… 4 or 5 times? Why do I keep going, some may wonder? Because, let’s be honest, what do you expect when you first start out with anything? Take playing soccer for instance. The first time out of the field, do you expect somebody to look at you and say “YOU SHOULD GO PRO?” Even take the skill drawing or painting, if you keep practicing, you will continue to learn and get better and better. With modeling, it is the same exact thing. It is not about money at all in the beginning because there is no money. I started modeling not knowing a clue about all the hard work and energy that gets put into a shoot or a runway show. Throughout pushing myself passed my comfort zone, and opening up myself to learn and grow, I have gained precious experience that is unexplainable. After every shoot I do, I feel more confident with my skills and my knowledge of the craft. I am still growing. I have realized that many look at modeling as a way of making an income. In the beginning, it is almost silly to look at it like that. It is silly to look at any skill like that when you are just starting out. Modeling is a way to meet new people, network, and market your name. That is what it’s all about! It’s about gaining treasured experiences, learning from your mistakes, and trying to perfect your craft each and every time. Once I started, I quickly forgot that I was not getting paid. I absolutely fell in love with the art and all the hard work that goes into it. I would continue to set goals for myself, reach them, and then set more. My advice to anyone that has hopes of making a living out of creating a name for themselves, is to “Just do it…for free!” When an opportunity comes my way, I never, ever pass it up. You never know what can come out of an experience. You don’t know who you may meet, what you may learn, or who you may influence. Opportunities are endless when you focus on creating a name and image for yourself. Just don’t expect to be making the big bucks right away. The saying “What you put into it, is what you’ll get out of it” really is the truth. Put all your passion, motivation, drive and determination into something, and what comes out of that will blow your mind. |
