Trust me when I say that finding your style and what suits you best is the beginning of a whole new outlook on life for you. When you find what you feel comfortable, sexy and beautiful in, it is only a matter of time that doors start opening up in your favor. Throughout middle school, I jumped onto the whole Hollister and Abercrombie phase that was practically sweeping the nation of pre-teen girls. Everyone had a jacket and shirt in every color possible and so did I. I must have had my mother spending well-over 200 dollars a month on me just because I felt the dire need to fit into the crowd and look just like everyone else.
The summer before my Freshman year of high school, I started surrounding myself with new people and was introduced to the whole concept of thrift stores. At first, I was like “Ew, used clothes!? I’ll just stick with my $89 dollar jackets from Hollister.” But thank God that summer I became best friends with two new girls who would change my view on fashion forever. Together, we found shopping and clothes to be something we were all very interested in. From that, our outlook on fashion flourished and together our styles evolved into something so much greater than we imagined. We soon became obsessed with thrift shopping because 1) how inexpensive everything was and 2) we quickly learned how to make “ugly” things look hot as hell. Not only did this new outlook on fashion help make us look cute for the first day of high school, but it also transformed our outlooks on life forever. At the time, I do not think any of us really realized how big of an impact this was making on our lives. We were all just having fun shopping and creating. We loved finding cheap things and making them look cute, no matter how awkward, weird or outlandish they looked on the hanger. Now, I am starting to realize that this new found love for creating my own style has conditioned me to be the unique person I am today. It has become so much more than just making ugly things look cute. Since finding such a unique style that suits me so well and watching my two best friends do the same, my confidence (as well as theirs) has skyrocketed and that is evident. It is no secret that the young American’s (my very own generation) today struggle deeply with depression and I have come to the conclusion that the underlying reason for this may be because of how necessary we feel it is to fit in with the “it crowd”. Every day, I witness girls losing themselves because they feel it is necessary to fit in and be like everyone else. They become so caught up in trying to copy-cat everyone else, while not realizing that in the midst of everything, they are ultimately losing themselves and who they truly are. I cannot tell you how blessed I feel to have surrounded myself with such amazing individuals before entering the world of high school. Finding a style that represents me and who I am has helped me realize that no matter what, I need to continually focus on being who I am- not what people want me to be. With this blog, I hope to help everyone that struggles with being comfortable with who they really are, understand that finding a style that really suits you best is just the first step of realizing so many other things that you will hopefully carry on with you throughout your life, as well as pass down to others. I have firsthand experience with being bullied into believing I need to be like everyone else. I also have firsthand experience in realizing that that is complete bullshit. Because I was blessed so early on in my life, I feel it is only right for me to help everyone see the beauty of true individuality and the ugliness of drab similarity.
PS: The photo below is of the two best friends I talked about above and I on the first days of school (Freshman-Senior year). Again, thank God for them.
